Anna J Cook

Award-winning author,
historian,
archivist.
I am awarding-winning local historian with many years’ experience in original historical research. In 2012, I won the Mills Archive Trust national research prize for my dissertation on the social history of Holgate windmill; an 18th century cornmill near York. I still write regularly for Mill News and support the Holgate Windmill Preservation Society.
I have also published biographies on York personalities in the York Historian journal. These include Miss Florence Wright, an inspirational teacher and long-time secretary of the Yorkshire Architectural and York Archaeological Society who campaigned to preserve York’s architectural heritage, and the many athletes who participated in the ancient sport of pedestrianism: competing to walk from London to York in record times.
I am currently working on two WW2 projects, a wartime diary left by a wealthy debutante, and a previously unknown collection of letters from a soldier back home to his wife in York.
When I am not working in the archives I can often be found in my garden keeping an eye on the growing vegetables and wildlife pond, and identifying the fascinating insects that visit them.
